The best works

Socrate

Symphonic drama for voice & orchestra (1911-1918). Based on the Dialogues of Plato, this masterpiece is treated with a calm attitude that is shockingly un-Satie. But then again, its unexpectedness makes it so very Satie. The sparseness of sentiments in this work is almost as distant as the literary source of the music.

Musique d'ameublement (Furniture Music)”

For 3 clarinets, trombone and piano (1920). Conceived with Darius Milhaud as music that would blend into its surroundings and not demand the listener's avid attention, the piece consisted of fragments taken from other composers’ works, continually repeated in various parts of the room.
