The Coming of Christianity

European colonialists arrived in Southeast Asia starting in the sixteenth century with the arts, politics, learning, and culture of the West. They also brought with them Christian missionaries, whose dedication led to conversions mainly amongst the receptive inhabitants of the Philippine Islands, Vietnam, and eastern Indonesia.

These people have been drawn to and shaped by Christian teachings about love for one’s neighbor and the moral purpose of this earthly life. Today, the Philippines and East Timor are the only Roman Catholic countries in Asia, part of their heritage coming from Spain and Portugal.
