The Arrival of Hinduism and Buddhism

dot

In the highly advanced civilizations of Bali and Cambodia, song and dance are performed more as expressions of thanks to higher beings than as public presentations. The tjandrametu dance from Bali adapts Hindu influences with folklore, while Khmer song is a hybrid of Tai and Chinese Buddhist forms. Both create distinct expressions of Southeast Asian gracefulness.

Performed by Canan Laroya, Mara Fojas, Samira Samimi-Moore, Tahmina Kakenova, Vaishali Jindal, and Vanesa Train

The music accompanying the dance is a composite of three interlocking songs called kotékan, all performed on gamelan (percussion orchestra of tuned gongs, bronze kettles, bronze metallophones, bamboo xylophones, drums, cymbals and flutes).
