Display & Design Ideas Magazine's 2004 industry survey on lighting use by retailers and retail designers shows that fixture aesthetics, such as design and color, are top factors that influence specifying and buying preferences. Other leading factors include light output characteristics, initial cost, and lamp life.

The majority of respondents are satisfied with low-voltage track, compact fluorescent, and metal halide lighting. Few are satisfied with neon and cold cathode, fiber optic, and theatrical style lighting.
