Display & Design Ideas Magazine's 2004 industry survey on flooring use by retailers and retail designers shows that cost is the number one factor influencing purchasing and specifying and purchasing decisions. Other major reasons are maintenance, aesthetics, and life expectancy.
The top flooring material used in store design projects is vinyl/resilient flooring, wall-to-wall carpeting, and ceramic tiles. The least used are synthetic stone substitutes, wood laminates, and natural stone. More than half of the respondents said they did not use green flooring products in their projects. For those who did use them, the reason most cited is the desire for a company to be seen as supportive of sustainability and of green reasons.
The top color preferences for carpeted flooring are nature/organic colors ad dark neutral tones. The top pattern preferences are subtle woven patterns and textures, with little or no color variation.
When asked about the top trends they see in flooring's future, respondents name the following in order:
- Green and sustainable products
- Stone and synthetic stone
- Recycled and recyclable materials
- Concrete, especially in colors and textures
- Colors and patterns
- Natural materials: wood, stone, and natural fibers
- Bamboo
- Ceramic tile
- Modular carpet systems
- More durable materials
- Vinyl, especially in faux finishes and patterns
- Wood laminate
- Cork
- Engineered wood
- Mixed materials
